Keynote speaker at the confer ence w ill be Dr. C.T. Vivian, Chair o f the Center for Democratic, renew al in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Vivian is an internationally known authority on problems in human relations, spe cializing in Black-W hite racial con flic t resolution. Dr. Vivian is the founder and director o f the Black Action Strategies and Information Center(BASIC) Workshop program, which has helped countless organi zations and individuals free them selves from the bondage o f racial ignorance, hatred and prejudice Dr. Vivian was counsel to and on the personal executive staff o f Dr Mar tin Luther King, Jr., and was closely associated with Dr. K ing’s civil rights work. George, O .M .I., to be the ninth Archbishop o f Port land in Oregon. Bishop George is currently the Bishop o f Yakima. Upon learning o f the appoint ment, Bishop Kenneth D Steiner, A uxiliary Bishop o f Portland and the Archdiocesan A dm inistrator during the interim between arch bishops, stated “ Bishop George brings a great deal o f pastoral and spiritual leadership to his new role as ninth Archbishop o f Portland. As a pastor, scholar, leader and deeply spiritual person, he w ill serve the People o f God in western Ore gon well.” Bishop George said o f this appointing me to serve the peo ple o f western Oregon as Archbish op o f Portland. Obviously, I have a lot to learn about the place and the people, and I look forward to our learning together.” The vacancy came in October, 1995, when Arch bishop W illia m J. George, both now de ceased. He has one sister, Mrs M ar garet Many Cain, o f Grand Rapids, M I He attended St. Pascal elementa ry school in Chicago and St. Henry Preparatory Seminary in Belleville, IL He entered the Missionary Ob- latesof Mary Immaculate in August, 1957. He attended Our Lady o f the Snows Seminary at Pass Christian, MS., and the seminary ofthe U niver sity o f Ottawa, Canada. Bishop George made his Profes sion o f Perpetual Vows as a member o f the Missionary Oblates o f Mary Immaculate on September 8, 1961. He was ordained a priest on Decem ber 21, 1963 at St. Pascal Church, Chicago, IL. He served as Provincial Superior o f the Midwestern U S. Province o f the Oblates o f Mary Immaculate, 1973 - 1974, when he was elected Vicar General for the OblatesofMary Immaculate in Rome L T E R N A from 1974 u n til 1986. Bishop George was appointed the fifth Bish op o f Yakima on July 10, 1990, and was ordained and installed as Bish op on September 21,1990. Bishop George w ill be the second archbish op o f Portland to be a member o f a religious order. Archbishop W ill iam H. Gross, CSsR, third Arch bishop o f Portland (1885-1898), was a member o f the Redemptorists. Bishop George w ill be the sec ond Bishop o f Yakima to become an Archbishop o f Portland. Arch bishop Cornelius M. Power, sev enth Archbishop o f Portland ( 1974- 1986) and the second Bishop o f Yak ima (1969-1974), preceded h im . Archbishop Power, now retired, said "the Holy Fathercouldn’t have made a better choice. Bishop George is a man o f broad experience.
